Dr. Kou Yang is the author of Laos and its Expatriates in the United States and The Making of Hmong America: Forty Years after the Secret War. Dr. Yang retired as a Professor of Asian American Studies in the Department of Ethnic and Gender Studies at California State University in Stanislaus. He arrived in the United States as a refugee from Laos in 1976, after a year in a refugee camp in Thailand. After an MSW (Master's in Social Work) from California State University, Fresno, he obtained his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree under the Joint Program in Educational Leadership from California State University, Fresno, and the University of California at Davis. During his 15 years of experience with social service programs in Los Angeles and Fresno, he worked on poverty reduction, child welfare and family services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation and mental health. He was an Assistant Professor of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire before moving to Stanislaus, where he served as Department Chair. He has published extensively on the Hmong, on Laos, and on the history and politics of America's relationship with Southeast Asia.
